The ‘Palais’ has been named after Rahel Varnhagen (1771–1833) - the Grande Dame of Berlin salon life. Only a few houses away from here, she hosted guests like Heinrich Heine, Friedrich Schlegel, Adelbert von Chamisso, Wilhelm und Alexander Humboldt as well as well as barons and princes. As it was then, Französische Strasse is a very special location still today: You can’t live more central in Berlin. Only one street further there is the Komische Oper, and towards South, along Friedrichstrasse, there is the famous Checkpoint Charlie. Towards North, you can pass is the subway station Friedrichstraße (U6 Tram 12/M1), cross the river Spree and arrive at Friedrichstadt Palast. In South West, there is Potsdamer Platz and the greens of Berliner Tiergarten, both also accessible by foot.
