Apartment for rent in Amsterdam

Introduction:

This beautiful, spacious, furnished apartment boasts a stunning view of one of Amsterdam's most popular canals, the Herengracht. Spread over three floors, it offers a total area of 160 m2 and a 25 m2 terrace. This apartment is finished to the highest standard, striking the perfect balance between the monumental and the modern.

It is perfectly located in the heart of the city centre, within walking distance of everything. The surrounding area boasts beautiful shops, terraces, and restaurants in the Jordaan district, as well as the Noordermarkt with its Saturday organic market and the '9 Straatjes'.
The monumental character of the canal house is typical of this apartment. The house itself and its immediate surroundings both evoke the rich past. Inside, the house has been modernised using beautiful materials. Most of the house has a beautiful herringbone oak floor and panel doors.

Layout:

The entrance is via the stairs to the front door. On the second floor, there are two bedrooms. Both are spacious and have ample wardrobe space. There is also an internal storage room. The bathroom is located between the two bedrooms. It is equipped with a double sink and a walk-in shower. The washing machine and tumble dryer are neatly hidden behind cupboard doors. There is also a separate toilet and a coat closet in the hallway.

The living area is conveniently located on the third floor. This room is characterised by its beams and rod-shaped windows on the front façade. The living room's extraordinary height on the canal side and the amount of natural daylight enjoyed here are particularly notable. The roof windows have electrically operated tilt-and-turn mechanisms. The apartment has three windows overlooking the canal, and from the sofa, you can enjoy beautiful views of the richly decorated buildings on the Herengracht and Hartenstraat. The kitchen is located at the rear of the third floor. It features several built-in appliances, including a large oven with a five-ring hob and a spacious fridge.
The worktop is approximately 3 metres long in total and is made of composite material. There is also ample storage space. Another mezzanine is located under the roof ridge. This space is in direct contact with the living area and would be ideal as a home office. Access to the approx. 25 m2 roof terrace is through this area. Here, you can enjoy the sun almost all day and take in beautiful views of the surrounding rooftops. From there, you can see the Royal Palace, the New Church, and the Westerkerk. As the highest terrace in the area, it offers privacy whilst being in the heart of Amsterdam.

Surroundings:

This monumental building is located in a beautiful spot in the middle of the historic ring of canals, acting as a focal point for the charming Nine Streets area. The location is very central, with the lively city centre and the Jordaan, home to many Amsterdam cafés, good restaurants and authentic shops, just a short walk away. There are supermarkets within a few minutes' walking distance. Many cultural amenities such as museums and theatres are also within walking distance. The Rokin metro station is a five-minute walk away, and the Central train station is a 15-minute walk along the canals.

History of the House

The house at Herengracht 247 was built in 1648. The Herengracht canal was created in 1612 on the initiative of Mayor Frans Hendricksz Oetgens. Initially, it was a fortified moat (dug in 1585) behind the Singel. The canal ran parallel to the moat outside the city wall within the city wall. It was named the Herengracht after the city's ruling lords.

Anthony Oetgens van Waveren built on the plot of Herengracht 247 in 1648. He was the son of Frans Hendricksz Oetgens. Anthony Oetgens van Waveren (1585–1658) was a knight and lord of Waveren, Botshol and Ruyge Wilnis. He was also a lieutenant of the militia and mayor of Amsterdam. He was elected to Parliament in 1637 and 1655, and to the Council of the Amsterdam Admiralty in 1652. In 1652 and 1653, he represented the Dutch Republic at the court of Christian IV, King of Denmark and Norway. In 1653, he mediated between Sweden and Poland, contributing to the peace treaty between Queen Christina of Sweden and King Johan II Casimir of Poland.
